2:49 p.m. - 2002-06-24 Dresses dilemma; an update for 6/4-6/11 I forgot to put a Quote of the Day in the last entry, so here are two for your enjoyment! "If I saw Orlando Bloom walking on the other side of the street, I don't care if it was in broad daylight, I'd throw him down to the ground and just... rape him!" ~Julie "I'm reading 'The Mists of Avalon,' and as soon as they described Lancelet as dark I think... Orlando Bloom. So in all these sex scenes, I'm just seeing him." ~Shriya haha. Anyway, right now I'm hiding out in the schoolroom trying to avoid kitchen duty. Lauren's graduation is at six -- we're getting there at a quarter to five to get good seats -- and then afterward we're having a whole bunch of people over for dinner. Thirtyish. There's the seven of us, plus Gramie and Grumps, plus Aunt Dale and Uncle Jon, plus Dr. Joan, plus Jane (spoofed as Ethel in this story), plus a whole bunch of teachers. I'll tell you who later, because I don't exactly know myself! Just escaped from Dad, who wanted help making the guacamole. I had to cut the avocados and them dump them into a big bowl. I find avocados disgusting, so it was not a Pleasant chore. Then Mom came home, we unloaded the car, and all ran off. haha. Yesterday I finally sent out an email to my entire address book informing them that I was changing my email address. I'm really happy because I got some nice replies. There are a few things I love seeing in my inbox: notices that someone signed my guestbook, notices that someone joined my notify-list, and real emails! I got super nice, chatty emails from Ed (elderly relative who couldn't make it to Kelsey's Bat Mitzvah), and Holly (one of our first Language Arts teacher, who moved when she got married, but one of the nicest and most creative people I've ever met). Holly's going to have a baby! I'm so happy! It's due July 5th. I really want to write to her, we haven't been in touch at all. Then let's see who else... I got responses from Aunt Jill, Judy (who sent it to the old account; if I tell you to email me at the new one, THERE'S A REASON!), Uncle Jon (ironically informing me that he changed his email), Gramie and Grumps, and Allison. Gramie wants to have lunch before I go to France, Wednesday or Thursday. We'll see what happens. Allison -- she's the cousin who had the complete mental breakdown last September -- started the summer term at Dartmouth last Tuesday. She's taking two classes because of psychiatric disability. She says her French class is fun, they're reading two plays by Moliere, it's on the salons in the 17th and 18th centuries. She's also lifeguarding and kayaking. I'm really glad it sounds good, this is her first time back to school all year long, a huge, huge step. Lauren got home late last night, ten-ish, and she sounded like she had had SUCH a good weekend. (She was at the orientation for being a counselor at this dance camp in upstate NY.) There were twenty female counselors and more than one hundred guy counselors, which she liked a LOT. And there are a bunch of Scottish guys (Billy Boyd! squee!) and Australian and English and all these sexy accents. Mmmmm, very jealous. But it really sounds like she had the time of her life since... um... the last time of her life, which was the month in Spain two summers ago. She's telling us about all these hot, twenty-something guys that she's been hanging out with, and she went to a karaoke bar with them on Saturday night (she told me this, not Mom and Dad, obviously) and was describing how funny one of them was when he got drunk. So then around eleven Dad sent us both upstairs to go to bed, but instead I went into her room and talked for another half-hour, and actually we had a pretty interesting conversation about guys, I want to write about it but I'll do it later, I really want to do some catching up. 6/4: Happy birthday to Aunt Jill (44), and maybe to Zip. Somewhere around then. Zip is an adorable Tibetan terrier and she's two years old. After school Mom and I ran over to Lord & Taylor's to see if they had any dresses there I could wear for Lauren M.'s party. She put on hold this brown and black and red dress, really funky pattern, can't describe it, and like a ruffly thing at the neckline and the hem... I don't know... it was pretty, but I didn't think it fit as well as the red one. She thought it did and thought that if I got it, I could also wear it for Lauren's graduation AND I could bring it to France. I couldn't decide. Speaking from the present, here's what happened: I told Mom I wanted the red dress, but she wanted me to get the brown-and-black one, so she got both. I wore the red dress to Lauren M.'s party, and I'm wearing the brown one to Lauren's graduation. (Clarification: Lauren M. is a girl from school, Lauren is my sister.) I really don't like how the brown one fits at all, and Mom noticed I was looking unhappy at lunch, so she says, "You know, I splurged on two dresses because you loved them both. You're acting so ungrateful, which I don't appreciate at all." WTF? She had told me I couldn't wear the red one to Lauren's graduation because it was too fancy, but then she told me that it was because it was too similar to Lauren's. It's NOT! They have the same thing at the neck, but mine is red and beize and has flowers and hers is black and has completely different white flowers. Grrrr. Anyway, back to Tuesday. We rushed home from Lord & Taylor's so I could get to a GSA meeting. I hadn't been able to make any of them before, because the timing has just sucked, but it was the last one and I was determined to go. So, I went! That made me happy. We made plans for a bake sale to raise money. After the meeting, I walked home and as soon as I got home Carley was there for our last classes. Damnit, I was wrong, that's when we played Balderdash. We just hung out and chatted for the classes on the 30th. I may go back and fix it sometime, but maybe not. We'll see! So, yeah, after the last last classes with Carley, I went upstairs and listened to more French tapes and studied for a French quiz on interrogative adjectives. 6/5: Got my period, which sucked, I felt so sick, I was going to just go home but I didn't want to miss chemistry or my last mentoring program. Mom had made brownies for me to take to mentoring, and they made me feel a little better. We played Trivial Pursuit, which I'd never played before, but it was kinda similar to Harry Potter Trivia Game. (Who cares if Trivial Pursuit came first?) French quiz wasn't too bad, 95. I wanted to go to ceramics, since it was the last time, but I knew that I should stay home and listen to my French tapes some more. I really suck at listening. I just kind of zone out and then I'm like, "huh? huh? how did we get to question #25 already?" Then that evening, I clicked on a little button at the bottom of the Welcome screen on AOL about creating a subaccount, and read through it, and decided I didn't want to, so I clicked No. But the No button and the Yes button were so close together, and our mouse is so screwy, that it went and created a subaccount! No "are you sure you want to do this?" or "Click to confirm," just, voila, I lost my account! So I kind of flipped out and went on tech help and called them a zillion times, but they couldn't talk to me because I wasn't listed as a billing contact. Dad was out for a business dinner but I called him anyway and when he was one with dinner, he called AOL and listed me as a secondary billing contact. So then I called them to fix my account, and they said I'd get back my address book and favorite places and buddy list and everything, and we were almost at that step, but then they didn't recognize my phone number (I was calling from the kid's line, not the home phone), and I had to call back on the home phone. SUCH A STUPID FUCKING SYSTEM! Anyway, yeah, it did eventually get fixed, and I got everything back, but it was definitely not fun. 6/6: Happy birthday to Missy! Yay! Had the listening part of my French final. In the first part, she read aloud phrases and we had to guess what she was saying from words that sound really alike. The second part she read aloud phrases and we had to guess who was saying them based on a picture. The third part she read dialogues and we had to guess what the next persun would say. I got 21/23. Pablo got full credit. Pablo sucks. After school Mom and I went back to Bloomingdale's to get the red dress on sale, but apparently it didn't go on sale for another week. So we went downstairs and picked out a bag as a present for Lauren M., and got three DKNY nightgowns (one for me, and then two as presents for Emma and Clemence). Came home and helped Lauren get ready for her prom! Woooot! She had a super-long slinky black dress that looked gorgeous on her, beautiful criss-cross-y straps in the back. Then she had a fuchsia (that word looks so weird) shawl thingie which looked pretty, and she got her hair done in a high bun with the back all curly. She was going with Dan, the sophomore at Yale, just as friends. He came over and we all took a bunch of pictures. Dan is not photogenic at all, but Lauren is. Then they went off and I uploaded another chapter onto my stupid LOTR fic. The MTV Movie Awards were at 9 PM. This was a problem since Alexa's bedtime is 8:30 and Kelsey's is 9. They got permission to watch the preshow, since it had a clip of the hobbits getting ready in New Zealand! SQUEE! That made me so happy! I watched for another half-hour then went to bed, I taped the whole thing. Over the past two weeks I finished watching it in various work-out sessions. The LOTR spoof was amusing. Was most happy that Orlando won Best Breakthrough Male -- he needs to get rid of that mustache, I don't like it at all. And was obviously THRILLED that LOTR won best movie! (Jessica: "Daddy, we won best movie!" Dad: "Who's 'we'?") Kels and Lex and I watched it together and squee-d in joy when we saw them accepting the award. YAY! 6/7: I have nothing written in my agenda for this day. It was a double chemistry lab. I probably did a bit of math or global studies. Oh, actually, something happened in chem class. Mr. C: "So I decided to cancel the nuclear quiz on Monday. I think our time would be better spent reviewing." Hillary: "Are you going to have any extra credit for anything in this quarter?" Mr. C: "No, I don't think so." Hillary: "Well, my grade is really bad right now! I need a good grade! Why can't we take this quiz!" Everyone else (alternating): "No! We don't want to study! Let's review instead! We have so much to do this weekend!" Mr. C.: "Okay, fine. You have a test on nuclear chemistry this Monday. Happy, Hillary?" Hillary: "Yes. Thank you, Mr. C." Rest of class: *ready to lynch Hillary* 6/8: Carley took Kelsey and Alexa to go see that Spirit of the Stallion movie, but I didn't want to go. Apparently they cried. Even Carley. This amuses me greatly. We all went out for dinner at Asiana, a good restaurant where we went for Aunt Dale's birthday. Guess what kind of food they serve there? 6/9: Alexa went to the Botanical Gardens with her friend Casey. I spent most of the day doing homework: math, global studies, studying for my French speaking exam, and studying for that nuclear chem quiz. (Die Hillary! Or Hilary, I don't know how it's spelled.) We got take-out from Ray's for dinner, another Chinese food place with the best sesame chicken in the world. Dad and Dan left for Paris at 5:45 PM, so I went downstairs and helped Dad write checks for a while. 6/10: Nuclear quiz wasn't too bad, 22/23. (Ironically, my average dropped from 100.3 to 99.6, but it all works out to 100 anyway, so I didn't feel the need to murder Hil(l)ary.) Finally brought in Jackie's birthday present to school, since it was the three-month-anniversary of her school. I had gotten her those keychains, one of a hobbithole (you can open the door and look in and see Gandalf!), one of Sting (press a button and it lights up blue!), and one of the Ring (press a button and it lights up red!). She really liked them and it was pretty funny, I think she should poke Kris with Sting because she sits behind him in chem class. Had classes with Maggie. Mom had told me that they were the last ones but it turned out they weren't, which majorly pissed me off, because I knew I wouldn't have time for any work that week. Grrr. So she gave me a little work, just six pages of global reading. I could cope with that. Wrote that awful French essay, which I typed up here, and faxed it frantically to Dad. Mrs. H. told us to do it without dictionaries or help, but then she also told us she'd grade it, so WTF? I don't want a bad grade! She ended up giving everyone A's, and she told me it was well-written (thanks, Dad) but short. Oh well. C'est la vie. After the essay I did more studying for the speaking exam, mainly by finding random pictures and telling stories about them. 6/11: Speaking part of the French exam, which I described in detail here. Technically my digital media project was due, but I was far from finished. I did, however, finish cutting everything out and gluing it to posterboard. However, I still needed to glue little bits of posterboard together so I could raise the hand and the two faces of myself (I described the project in my previous entry), and then attach the posterboard to the background of Utah and to the hand or the face. Yeah. Basically, make it into a sculpture. After chem, I stayed sixth period to help out with the GSA bakesale. Spent most of the evening trying to motivate myself for the French final. Failed miserably. Went online to see if Maya could motivate me. She failed miserably too. Back to 6/24. Dr. Joan is here, and I need to get ready (I'm in the dress, but need to get my hair done and pack a bag and stuff if we're going to be sittin around for an hour). I'll be spending almost all of tomorrow packing with Mom, but hopefully I'll be able to get in an update on Wednesday. Maybe more on Thursday and Friday; my flight is at 9 PM. But I have so much damn packing to do... *moans* I also forgot I need to clean up my room today, damnit, or else Mom won't help me pack. I've got to go do that now... P.S. I don't have time to check the links on this entry, since Dr. Joan could come into the schoolroom any minute and she's SUCH a snoop, so if they don't work, let me know and I'll fix 'em!
